In aerospace sector, Qualification Testing of materials, electronic devices, printed circuit board assemblies, wires, or complex systems allow demonstrate their reliability under extreme condition. Typically, the tests involved in a qualification process are performed by outsourcing facilities. Virtual Lab was born as an interactive tool to help companies to track, review or approve any laboratory results immediately, thus reducing one of the fundamental problems facing the industry, lead times. The goal of this work is discussed how digitalization can change the relationship between testing laboratories and customers and how digitalization can improve efficiency.

To implement this digitalization strategy, daily work and data flows, process, tools, and documentation used in the laboratory were reviewed, listed and analyzed, from receipt of samples to how report the final test results. This exploratory study allowed to identify critical tasks and develop the first pilot scale Virtual Lab. Herein, some of the most useful digital solutions are briefly explained.

  • Video streaming to review how the samples are handling or how the test is performed.
  • Technical Chats to discuss with the laboratory specialists and technicians
  • Direct access to high resolution images
  • Remote visual inspection

While this platform gained good acceptance, its advantages are so great that Virtual Lab is becoming in an integrated environment to review, share and discuss the results of the testing laboratory.

Our proposal may serve as a basis for discussion. We strongly believe in the long-term value of Virtual Lab and in their potential thanks to artificial intelligence and its database.
