The development of thermochromic coatings with variable optical properties is currently of high-interest, due to the potential applications in thermal control of spacecrafts, as they can allow dynamic, yet passive management of heat rejection/absorption. In order to fully characterize the performance of such materials across different temperatures, ESA has adapted standard thermo-optical characterization techniques. This paper focus on various test set-ups that were designed and built to evaluate the infra-red reflectance of thermochromic samples at different temperatures, allowing to determine the temperature dependence of thermal emissivity.
