Material suppliers modify from time to time the formulation of the chemicals comprising their portfolio, such as adhesives, lubricants, primers, etc. The reasons, sometimes unknown, can include the alignment with new regulations (local or global like REACh) or because of changes in business strategies. In some cases, materials can become temporarily or completely unavailable, which means that a re-lifing or replacement are needed.
To ensure reliability and quality of the spacecraft, it is paramount to assess the effects of these changes, and to ensure that the properties of the material remain acceptable. For this, testing is recommended, tailored to the type of material and depending on the final application.
In this contribution we will present the test logic and results performed on different types of chemicals used in the space sector, which underwent formulation change in the recent years.
